Our Coffee Grades

Intro

The Kenya coffee grading system classifies coffee beans based on size, shape, weight and overall quality. There are 7 main grades: AA, AB, C, PB, E, TT & T. The grading system typically focuses on the bean size and density, which are indicators of the coffee's quality and flavor potential.

Grade AA

Kenya Coffee Grade AA is the highest grade for Kenyan coffee, indicating larger bean size. The beans are typically screened to a size of 18 (7.2 millimeters and above). Due to its size, bright acidity, and full body, it is highly prized. It features fruity flavors like berry and citrus, with a wine-like quality, and is known for its intense aroma. Grown at high altitudes and typically wet-processed, it offers a vibrant and rich coffee experience. Makes between 10-15% of the total production

Grade AB

The "AB" grade combines two bean sizes, "A" (larger beans) and "B" (slightly smaller beans). The screen size for AB beans is 16/17 (6.8 to 7.2 millimeters in diameter). While not the largest, AB beans are still considered to be of a high grade. It is considered a premium grade, offering quality and flavor characteristics that make it popular among specialty coffee enthusiasts. On a normal season, this grade makes about 40% of the total production, which is the highest among all the grades.

Grade C

This grade consists of smaller and lighter beans than AB, with a screen size of around 14/15 (around 5.8 to 6.2 millimeters). It is often used for blending rather than as a standalone specialty coffee.

Garde PB(Pea berries)

These are unique coffee beans that develop as a single round bean inside the coffee cherry, rather than the usual two flat-sided beans. They make up about 5% of the total coffee harvest.

The other 3 grades are E, TT & T. E-grade These beans are irregularly shaped and much larger than AA beans. TT-grade is made up of the lighter beans from AA & AB grades. T-grade. Grade T is the smallest, thinnest, and lowest quality beans.
